Oscar's Multi-Monitor taskBar

I run a twin monitor (dual-head graphics card) system both at home and at my office. One card is a high spec Nvidia card, and the other PNY. The Nvidia has some nice application integrated tools for switching apps to the alternate montior, the PNY card has none.

Having found this neat, and free, tool, I'm now test driving it on both systems. The tool gives me a task bar on both monitors, and minimises apps to the appropriate monitor taskbar. It has a tidy little option that adds a small icon to an apps title bar allowing you to "throw" the app to the other monitor.

Java Gmail Application for the Blackberry 8700

An updated Java based application's now available from Google for handhelds. It looks nicer, and appears to be pretty fast too. One downside I have noticed is that the current version doesn't allow me to switch my "send as" address when composing an email.

Browse here from your handheld device to download directly.

Google Talkabout: Offline messages

Trusty Google Talk continues to add expected features, the neat aspect is that offline messages addressed to you appear in your Gmail account.

Offline messages Tired of getting the old "did-not-receive-your-chat" error message every time a friend disconnects while you are writing? If so, you will be pleased to hear that we're making things a little bit better by turning on another top requested feature in Google Talk: offline messages.

Google overtakes Channel 4 in ad revenue

An interesting pivot point..... as is also Channel 4 considering making its programming available via Google

Google overtakes Channel 4 in ad revenue Jason Deans Wednesday November 1, 2006 Google will make more money from UK advertising this year than Channel 4 according to Andy Duncan, the broadcaster's chief executive. Mr Duncan told that Google UK's ad revenues for 2006 would be around £900m, overtaking Channel 4 for the first time. The broadcaster's ad revenue for the year will be around £800m, he added.

Lenovo Thinkpad Battery recall

Following the recent spate of battery recalls, following some well publicised spontaneous combustions, Lenovo also appear to have a bad batch from Sony. My batteries checked out OK, but we have some recent purchases that are on the recall list.

Check your battery serial numbers here

Thinkpad burns at LAX

Story circulating of a Thinkpad battery burnout at LAX. No reports of the battery details, so may not be a genuine IBM OEM'd.

Reports seem to think it's aT4x series.

No recall notices from IBM so far, so I'm not worrying....yet.

More detail of the incident here.

Dangerous Corner; a pre-war soap

This weekend we went to see the last performance of a weeks run of J B Priestley's "Dangerous Corner" at the Theatre Royal Windsor.

A well performed, good tale; one in a series of Priestley's "Time" plays.

Charlie Brooks, of the soap "Eastenders" played Betty. The plot of the play, written in 1932, contained, in two hours of performance, all the necessary elements regulary portrayed in modern day soaps; theft, lies, adultery (hetero/homo), drugs, violence, and quite a lot of weeping & shouting!

No contest though; I prefer the 1932 version :-)

Clearing the unread mail icon on my Blackberry

I could not clear down the unread mail icon on my Blackberry 8700.

Not critical, but irritating!

Tried various approaches; mark prior read, delete prior, pull battery, all to no avail.

No unread mail to be seen....

Somewhere the Blackberry was holding something, somewhere unread.

Used "Search" to find it as follows:

  • From within Blackberry Messaging (mail)
  • Menu, Search
  • Search again (blank search), i.e. return all
  • Hit "U" to find next unread.....

I found an errant unread message filed away in the search results!

An unread mail, somehow accidentally saved....

Irritating problem cured

At long last The Prisoner starts making it to the Big Screen

I have been known to be cult-ish about the short lived Prisoner series, occasionally re-run now & then. Rumours of a re-make for the big screen have circulated for years; seems we're now a little closer.

Import Contacts from Thunderbird to Gmail

With the attraction of the recently launched Google calendar functionality, I wanted to migrate a number of family email accounts to use Gmail.

Contacts needed to be exported from Thunderbird and imported to Gmail. The version of Thunderbird in use (1.0.6) exports Contacts fine to a CSV file, but omits a header row, so Contact import fails to Gmail.

Slightly annoying, but easily fixed by pasting the header row below at the start of the CSV file. Not rocket science, but might save someone a few minutes.
